Project David honors the memory of David Munro, a 2012 Lincoln Southwest graduate. While at LSW, David Munro was active in student council, Ambassadors, varsity vocal music, and the athletic program, serving as student manager for his beloved Silverhawk basketball team all four years. No one was a prouder Silverhawk.
This fund, developed to support service-learning initiatives at LSW, was crafted with special inspiration from longtime faculty member Dennis Hershberger, one of David’s favorites. This fund is to be used under the direction and guidance of LSW faculty advisors of the Good Citizen Initiative. Project David promotes civic responsibility, community engagement, and compassion, including support for program development, activities and projects, and student and faculty experiential opportunities.

David died in 2018 after a courageous, near 25-year battle with hypoplastic left heart syndrome among many other conditions, in need of a heart transplant that never came.
His challenges were significant, but his resilience and perseverance in forging a path forward against unthinkable odds were exceptional. David often said, “You do what you have to do.” Indeed, he did; and how he did it was remarkable.
David lived generously; with grace, humility and an exceptional capacity to rejoice in the good fortune of others. Despite the struggles and suffering life brought his way, David lived with gratitude for what he was able to do, experience and accomplish, and for all those who supported him on his journey. He was especially grateful for the many meaningful relationships he forged with so many faculty and staff members at LSW that enriched his experience.
Compassion ran deep in David. He spent countless days, weeks and months hospitalized throughout his life. He was known for walking laps around the hospital floors, always spreading joy to other patients and hospital staff with a smile, a wave, conversation, and often sending anonymous gifts to other children and adolescents he noticed might need a pick-me-up or without a companion by their side. David also spent many years volunteering at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, where he had a particular fondness for and connection with residents of the long-term care unit. While in college, David enjoyed numerous volunteer activities. Among his favorites were fundraisers for Serious Fun Camp and Huskers Helping the Homeless drives.
With David as inspiration, it is our hope that this fund helps provide resources for program development, project support and educational opportunities that foster a culture of service, civic responsibility and community outreach among students and faculty at LSW.
